Indian eating etiquette has its unique customs and practices. These are discussed below.
People in India in olden times usually eat on the floor when eating. Food is shared and eaten with the right hand. Roti was dipped into curry and eaten with the hand and cleaned banana leaves were used as plates. At present, this is sometimes still done too, although the availability of utensils is already prevalent. Breakfast among Indians consists of tea or coffee, coupled with roti, parathas (pan-fried flat bread) and a vegetable dish with pickles and curd; or dhokla and milk; or idlis and dosas plus chutneys. Lunch and dinner meanwhile are composed of rice and wholewheat rotis with kulcha, nan or parathas, plus curd and sweets or traditional desserts. After dinner snacks and tea are sometimes still eaten as well.
